Self-Evaluation Speech Critique
During this class, I have seen a real improvement in how I present to a group and how I prepare to share new ideas. I have always been organized, so building slide presentations has never been the hard part for me. I usually feel confident in how I structure my content and ensure everything is clear and well put together. What I did not fully expect, though, was how much nerves can affect the actual delivery of a presentation.
Over time, I have learned that a strong presentation is not just about what is on the slides, but how the message is delivered. The way you speak, your pacing, and your confidence all shape how the audience receives the information. Even well-prepared content can lose impact if it is rushed or delivered without intention. This class has helped me become more aware of those details and more mindful of how I present myself when speaking.
Outside of class, I have also been involved with the Miss America Organization, which has helped me grow in my communication skills through interview practice. That experience has pushed me to think more quickly, stay composed under pressure, and answer questions clearly and confidently. It has also helped me become more aware of professionalism in how I speak and carry myself.
This class has built on that foundation and helped me take those skills even further. I have learned to combine my natural organization with stronger delivery skills, making my presentations feel more complete and effective. One of the most important things I am taking away is that the more I practice speaking and doing speeches, the more prepared I will be for my future. It has also helped me understand that it is okay to be nervous, because nerves are normal. Sometimes I try to watch public speaking advice on YouTube to help me feel more prepared and less nervous. Still, as long as I keep showing up and trying, I will continue to improve.
One area I found I could improve on is slowing down and being more intentional with my delivery. At times, I notice I speak too quickly when I am nervous or trying to get through my points. I also realized I can work on making more eye contact and relying less on reading directly from my slides or notes. Improving these habits will help me feel more natural and confident when I present, and it will also make my message clearer to the audience.
Overall, this experience has helped me grow both as a student and as a communicator. I feel more confident in my ability to present ideas clearly and professionally, and I know communication will keep developing the more I practice it.
